Root Canal

Detailed cross-section illustration of a root canal procedure showing the cleaning of infected tooth pulp.Tooth decay and cavities are a major cause of tooth loss. Your teeth have a soft tissue called the pulp, consisting of nerves and blood vessels. A tooth cavity provides the entry of bacteria into your pulp. These bacteria multiply and cause a serious infection resulting in the death of your pulp and eventual loss of teeth. To save your natural tooth, you may need a root canal treatment. Root canal treatments eliminate bacteria from your tooth by removing the pulp, cleaning the affected area, and sealing it. At Ortega Family Dental, we will help you stop tooth decay and cavities with a root canal procedure.

Why Do I Need a Root Canal?

A tooth's pulp can get damaged due to deep cavities, dental procedures, large fillings, genetics, cracks, and chippings. A damaged pulp cannot repair itself, and removal is the ultimate solution. If left untreated, this pulp hosts bacteria, which will multiply within the chamber, causing infections or an abscessed tooth. The infection weakens the bones and ligaments, making your tooth loose and will start falling out with time. Also, this infection may cause pain and swelling on your face and neck areas. You may also experience pain when chewing and sensitivity to heat and cold. Your gums will darken, become tender, and swollen with visible pimples on them. Root canal treatment saves your natural teeth, allowing you to chew efficiently, bite normally, and smile confidently.

Root Canal Procedure

The efficient functioning of your oral nerves is important for your teeth to grow out of the gum. After this, the nerves are only there for sensitivity purpose, and their removal will not affect the normal functioning of your tooth. Before a root canal treatment, our professionals will take an X-ray of the affected tooth for examination. We will then put you under local anesthesia to ensure your comfort during the procedure. If the tooth is no longer sensitive, you may not require anesthesia. We will then place a dam around your tooth to ensure it remains dry during the procedure and to prevent you from accidentally swallowing any chemicals. To remove the infected pulp, our team will make an access hole in your tooth. If you have a tooth abscess, we will drain it at this point. Next, we will clean the root canal and enlarge it using some files to make the filling possible. If you have any signs of infection, we will administer antibiotics at this point. Our team will then fill and seal your tooth to prevent reinfection or add a crown to prevent the tooth from fracturing.

What To Expect After Root Canal Treatment

After treatment, you will experience tooth sensitivity for a few days. However, this should not worry you as our team will prescribe some ibuprofen to relieve you of the discomfort. We will also prescribe antibiotics to prevent reinfection. You will also need to practice personal care to avoid the need for future root canal treatment. This will include avoiding sugary foods, regular brushing and flossing of your teeth.
