Dental Exam

A smiling dentist holding an instrument while a patient and a dental assistant interact in the background during a dental check-up.A dental examination is vital for all age groups, for the timely detection and intervention of oral issues. Most dental problems, if detected early, are reversible with little or no medication. However, if such problems advance to chronic levels, they may cause loss of teeth or pose severe threats to an individual's overall health. Ortega Family Dental offers professional dental exams and follow-ups to ensure your oral health.

Why Do I Need a Dental Exam?

Dental exams help keep your dental health in check. Through these exams, our professionals perform cleaning and treatment exercises. Cleanings help to clear plaque, the cause of most gum disease. During the exam, our team will also check your overall health and take corrective actions on decay and chipped teeth. If you have a child, regular exams will help monitor the growth of their teeth. These regular exams can help keep an eye on minor misalignment problems common in children.

What To Expect From a Dental Exam

For a healthy oral life, you need to have your teeth examined at least twice a year, even if you do not have an underlying condition. When you visit our team for a dental examination, we will conduct either a visual observation, a dental X-ray, or both. The exams on your teeth and gums will check for decay, chippings, and signs of gum infections or disease. If you have crowns or fillings, the examination will check for damages. An exam on your jawbone and roots will check for strength, alignment problems, chewing capabilities, and muscle movement as you chew, smile, or speak. A neck examination checks the lymph nodes for swelling, which may be a sign of disease. Our team will also inspect your tongue, inner cheek, and lips for oral cancer. To finalize the exam, our professionals will evaluate your dental history against the exam results. In the case of underlying problems, our team will schedule a treatment plan. Depending on the intensity of issues detected by the exam, the treatment plan can be short term or long term.

Types of Dental Exams

The dental exam consists of visual observation and dental X-rays. For eye observation, our dentist will ask you to open your mouth, and will observe the status of your teeth and mouth. In the dental X-ray, the team will capture details of your gums, teeth, and jawbone. The team will do a dental X-ray only if they suspect an underlying problem that requires further observation. Dental X-rays are also useful in monitoring the growth of wisdom teeth.

Dental Hygiene Between Exams

While exams help to detect any oral problems, individual responsibility is necessary to ensure healthy teeth between visits. To keep your teeth healthy, use the right toothpaste to brush your teeth at least twice a day. Floss twice a day to clean the tight spaces between your teeth. You should also eat a healthy, balanced diet and drink plenty of water to keep your mouth rinsed and hydrated.

If you want healthy oral hygiene, you need regular dental exams to prevent conditions that may cause teeth loss. Call Ortega Family Dental at (904) 914-4008 for more information and scheduling.
