Is a Root Resection the Same as a Root Canal?

 Let's explore two dental procedures that sound similar but address very different problems: root resections and root canals. Many people confuse these terms, so it's important to understand the distinction to make informed decisions about your oral care.
Understanding the Root Canal Procedure
The goal of a root canal is to save a tooth that has become infected. The infection usually starts in the pulp, the soft inner tissue of the tooth that contains nerves and blood vessels. This can happen due to deep decay, a crack in the tooth, or repeated dental procedures on the same tooth.
During a root canal, a dentist or endodontist (a root canal specialist) carefully removes the infected or damaged pulp. The inside of the tooth is then cleaned, disinfected, and shaped. Finally, the empty space is filled with a biocompatible material, typically gutta-percha, and sealed to prevent further infection. Following a root canal, a crown is often placed on the tooth to provide strength and protection. This restoration dentistry helps the tooth function normally again.
What is a Root Resection?
A root resection, also called an apicoectomy, is a surgical procedure performed only when a root canal has failed to eliminate an infection in the bone surrounding the tooth. It's considered a more advanced treatment. Think of it as a “second chance” to save a tooth after a root canal hasn't fully resolved the problem.
The procedure involves making a small incision in the gum tissue to expose the bone and the end of the tooth root. The infected tissue and a small portion of the root tip are then removed. A filling is placed to seal the end of the root, and the gum tissue is stitched back into place. Over time, the bone around the root will heal.
Key Differences Explained
The primary difference lies in the scope of the treatment. A root canal addresses infection within the tooth. A root resection, on the other hand, addresses infection outside the tooth, specifically at the root tip, that persists after a root canal.
Think of it like this: a root canal is like cleaning out the pipes inside your house, while a root resection is like repairing a leak in the pipes outside your house, underground.
Another key difference is that a root canal is a more common and less invasive procedure. A root resection is a surgical procedure that's typically reserved for more complex situations.
When is Each Procedure Recommended?
A root canal is recommended when the pulp inside the tooth is infected or inflamed. Signs of this include pain, sensitivity to hot or cold, swelling, and discoloration of the tooth.
